Mary Lynn Perry Receives National Recognition for Exemplary Leadership in Volunteer Engagement

Mary Lynn Perry, NAVPLG Past President and Member of the Board of Directors, received national recognition for exemplary leadership in volunteer engagement. Ms. Perry earned the Impact Award, presented in October 2023 by the Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement (AL!VE) in the Exemplary Leader category.

This award recognizes volunteer engagement leaders for their efforts in providing a quality volunteer engagement program, willingness to network, mentor or collaborate with their peers, advocate for the profession and involvement at the national and local level with volunteer engagement professionals.

AL!VE will provide a monetary award to Ms. Perry that she may use for professional development expenses, such as continuing education, books, resources or pursuing the Certified Volunteer Administrator credential (CVA), an international professional credential for those who manage volunteers and/or programs.

International Volunteer Manager's Day

The Global IVMDay Organising Committee are proud to announce the theme for IVMDay for 2023 - “Helping Others Help.”

In selecting this year’s theme, they are seeking to achieve two things:

Firstly, to bring attention back to the very core of what it is we do – we enable others to make a difference!

But equally as important, is the reminder that it is not just paid professionals who make up our wonderful profession, and so in the leadup to IVMDay 2023, we also want to explore and find ways to pay homage to all those who lead volunteers in their own time, at their own expense or as a part of a different broader job.

Celebrate IVM Day on November 5!

'Tis the Season ~ Family Volunteering

The winter holidays often bring an influx of families wishing to “give back” by volunteering in their community together.

In this November NAVPLG member forum, we will:

  • Discuss what family volunteering looks like
  • Design volunteer tasks to accommodate a range of ages from pre-schoolers to grandparents
  • Create meaningful volunteer experiences for the entire family, including helping families discover DIY opportunities
  • Share best practices for marketing, setting realistic expectations, and managing the outcomes

Join NAVPLG Education Chair, Marcia Hale, CVA, in a lively discussion on the ins and outs of family volunteers on Wednesday, November 15 at 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Pacific TimeClick Here to Register

AL!VE Virtual Volunteer Manager's Conference ~ Leveraging Technology in a Human World: Inclusively, Responsibly, Creatively

Mary Lynn Perry

The AL!VE and Better Impact Virtual Volunteer Management Conference – Leveraging Technology in a Human World: Inclusively, Responsibly, Creatively – was held on October 17 and 18 and streamed to sites in Canada and the US. My local association, DOVIA Sacramento, was fortunate to be a host site again this year.

The facilitator and moderator was Rob Jackson, Director of Rob Jackson Consulting Ltd, a consultancy and training company that helps engage and inspire people to bring about change. Rob has over 30 years of experience and consults internationally.

Beth Kanter shared her expertise in technology and volunteer management for two sessions. Beth is a well-established, international nonprofit thought leader and author. Her fourth book, The Smart Nonprofit, examines the impact of artificial intelligence for nonprofitsBeth’s presentations caused some lively discussion among our participants and much sharing about ways volunteer managers are currently using AI tools in their work. Local participants indicated they used AI to assist in writing volunteer opportunity descriptions and searching the internet for public domain images for marketing volunteer programs.

Stephan Dobri, who has a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering with the Building and Designing Assistive Technology (BDAT) Lab at Queen’s University, presented on assistive technology and ways it can support volunteers and volunteer programs.

Finally, Tony Goodrow, founder and CEO of Better Impact, presented about the responsible and secure ways to manage technology, especially keeping data secure. Cybersecurity is a hot topic for everyone and keeping the data volunteer managers collect secure is a serious task.
