National NAVPLG Volunteer Management Awards Presented | Outstanding Volunteer Administrator

The National Association of Volunteer Programs in Local Government (NAVPLG) announced three award winners during their annual meeting held online on July 20.  The awards recognize excellence in the field of volunteer management in city and county governments.  

Jody Cook, Volunteer Program Specialist with the City of Columbia, Missouri was recognized as Outstanding Volunteer Administrator. Jody worked with the City’s Special Olympics Program for nine years coordinating hundreds of volunteers before moving to her current position where she works with volunteers who focus on recycling and waste reduction.



 

NAVPLG Innovative Program Award

Volunteer Gwinnett, Gwinnett County, Georgia received the Innovative Program Award for their Community Services Mobile Food Distribution. Volunteer Gwinnett deployed a weekly mobile food strategy by partnering with Atlanta Community Food Bank to supply Gwinnett families with 40 to 50 pounds of food per household. The program served more than a million pounds of food since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, reaching 28,312 households and 115,000 residents in Gwinnett County.

NAVPLG Rising to Excellence Award

The Rising to Excellence Award was presented to 3rd Cavalry Regiment & Cen-Tex Partnership at Fort Hood, Texas for their environmental stewardship program at Thomas Arnold Elementary School. Troopers from 1st Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, also known as the Tiger Squadron worked on the school’s garden, beautified the schools grounds and taught students about gardening. The program developed a pumpkin patch, pollinator beds, hummingbird bed, and vegetable bed that will help to promote environmental education and stewardship.

Welcome New NAVPLG Board Members

NAVPLG is pleased to announce new Member-at-Large board members. Please welcome Michal D. Harris and Deborah Macon.

 Michal D. Harris, MBA, lives in Little Rock, Arkansas and has a passion   for his community. A few examples of his numerous leadership roles   include the presidency of the Arkansas State House Society and a local   Kiwanis chapter. He is also the Vice President of the Arkansas Volunteer   Coordinator's Association and a board member of several organizations   around Arkansas. He is the founder and Executive Director of the award   winning non-profit, Ikarus Youth Engagement Program, which stands for   Intelligent, Kind Adolescents Representing Us. He is currently an instructor in the Public Administration Department at Arkansas Baptist College.

 Deborah L. Macon, MBA, hails from Michigan and has over 30  years of experience in the volunteer field. She is in her 23rd year   as a Member of the Greater West Bloomfield Cable   Communications Commission providing local cable and radio to   households in much of Oakland County Michigan. Her vast   experience includes teaching volunteer management at Wayne   State University, authoring "Political Volunteering: Lifeblood of   Healthy Democracy," consulting for Michigan Association of School Boards, serving on the National Board of League of Women Voters and currently chairing the Volunteer Engagement Committee at United Way for Southeastern Michigan.

AL!VE Impact Awards

AL!VE Impact Awards:  Nominations open until September 12. AL!VE and Better Impact are proud to present the 4th Annual National IMPACT Awards. The IMPACT Awards celebrate volunteer engagement professionals who have shown exceptional leadership and knowledge in the field. They showcase the importance of the profession and inspire professionals across the country to continue to lead in their communities. NEW nomination process for 2022. Nominators complete a brief online form requesting nominee contact information and summary of their impact. Nominees are notified and MUST complete an online form sharing their story and answering questions about their work to finalize the nomination. Nominations for the IMPACT Awards open on Monday August 1, 2022 and close on Monday, September 12, 2022 at 5 PM (EST).
