Introducing Secretary Kandy LeMoine

Kandy LeMoine is a 23 year employee of the City of Farmington with 20 years of experience coordinating volunteers. She was awarded the credential “Certified in Volunteer Administration,” by the Council of Certification in Volunteer Administration in 2016. She is a 2005 graduate and member of Leadership San Juan. Graduating with an Associate of Arts Degree from San Juan College in 1993, she began serving on the San Juan College Volunteer Center Advisory Committee in 2011, and the Farm Farmington Advisory Committee and San Juan College High School Professional Advisory Committee in 2017. LeMoine is also a 2014 Master Gardener graduate of New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service and volunteers as a team teacher for community gardening classes. She gained international volunteer experience in 2012 through Conscious Journeys with Tibetan Village Project and San Juan College to install solar for a medical clinic in Sihurong, China. As volunteer coordinator for the Mayor’s Volunteer Program, LeMoine aims to create an internationally known volunteer program that incorporates all sectors of the community in volunteer service and recognition.

Under LeMoine's leadership the volunteer program has grown from less than 50 volunteers for the Farmington Museum in 1994 to over 600 volunteers who serve in many departments/divisions for the City of Farmington. Renaming the volunteer recognition program in 2016, LeMoine established volunteer recognition as the Works of Heart series. This series spotlights volunteerism by highlighting humanitarians for their heartfelt effort to build community. Four Works of Heart events are planned each year: 1. The Mayor's Volunteer Program (MVP) Appreciation Awards Banquet is a catered, evening gala to honor volunteers for their hours and years of dedication to the City of Farmington. 2. The MVP Volunteer Expo is a civic engagement forum involving as many volunteer agencies as is possible by invitation for registration. 3. The MVP Picnic is an afternoon, potluck gathering held each September 21 on International Day of Peace. 4. The MVP Brunch is a mid-morning, potluck affair including a white elephant gift exchange held each first Saturday in December.  Each occasion is designed to present a Works of Heart speaker and to share the joy of volunteerism by savoring our lives together and strengthening our commitment to community.

After reading the book by Jane Addams, Twenty Years at Hull-House, LeMoine conceptualized a logo to be designed for the Works of Heart series. She chose Jane Addams as mascot and a quote from the book as the motto. "The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life."  The wheat in the logo represents nourishment, and the poppy conveys relief from suffering. Each Works of Heart speaker receives a copy of the children's book by Tanya Lee Stone, The House That Jane Built: A Story About Jane Addams.

LeMoine also enjoys hosting a monthly Philosopher’s Table discussion group in her home. The group meets to learn about herbs through sharing food and explore philosophical concepts through the lens of a unique theme from a particular philosopher in a specific country. The ideas and questions for conversation and the menu come from the book by Marietta McCarthy, The Philosopher’s Table.
