Founded in 1997 as the National Association of Volunteer Programs in Local Government, NAVPLG is the only professional association dedicated to empowering leaders of volunteer programs across the public sector. In 2024, we proudly adopted our new name—the National Association of Volunteer Program Leaders in Government—to reflect our commitment to supporting volunteer program leaders at all levels of government, including local, state, tribal, and federal agencies. Since our inception, NAVPLG has remained grounded in its original mission, vision, and core pillars of leadership, education, advocacy, networking, and information exchange. Today, NAVPLG provides essential resources, training, and a collaborative network that drives impactful volunteer engagement and strengthens communities across the nation.
To strengthen and support volunteer program leaders in the public sector by fostering leadership, promoting continuous education, advocating for volunteer engagement, facilitating meaningful networking, and enabling the exchange of valuable information.
Transforming communities through highly professional volunteer program leaders associated with all governments in the United States.
NAVPLG's work is essential to empowering volunteer program leaders and enhancing public service, guided by its five pillars: Leadership, Education, Advocacy, Networking, and Information Exchange. Each pillar contributes uniquely to building a strong foundation for professional growth and community impact.
NAVPLG cultivates leadership by supporting volunteer program leaders in developing the skills and confidence needed to guide and inspire their teams. Through leadership development, NAVPLG ensures these leaders can effectively coordinate and elevate volunteer programs that align with public sector goals, driving meaningful change and fostering stronger communities.
Continuous learning is critical in an ever-evolving public service landscape. NAVPLG provides high-quality educational resources, webinars, and training programs that keep volunteer program leaders informed on best practices, emerging trends, and innovative strategies. This commitment to education helps leaders adapt and excel, enhancing their programs’ efficiency and impact.
NAVPLG actively advocates for the recognition and support of volunteer program leaders within government agencies and beyond. This includes promoting the value and importance of the volunteer engagement profession at both local and national levels. By championing these leaders and their contributions, NAVPLG raises awareness about their essential role in building community resilience and fostering public trust. Advocacy efforts help ensure that volunteer engagement professionals receive the resources, policy support, and acknowledgment they need to sustain and expand impactful programs.
Connection and collaboration are powerful tools for growth. NAVPLG fosters a robust network of professionals who share experiences, challenges, and solutions. By connecting leaders across government sectors and jurisdictions, NAVPLG enables the exchange of insights and peer support that strengthens programs and fosters innovation in volunteer management.
Timely access to relevant information is crucial for informed decision-making. NAVPLG’s commitment to information exchange ensures that volunteer program leaders stay updated with the latest research, policies, and resources. By sharing knowledge and experiences, NAVPLG helps leaders enhance their strategic approaches and implement effective solutions in their work.
Together, these five pillars enable NAVPLG to equip volunteer program leaders with the tools, skills, and support they need to excel. This comprehensive approach enhances the effectiveness of public service volunteer programs, ultimately contributing to stronger, more engaged communities nationwide.
