Presidents' Message

Earning your CVA (Certified in Volunteer Administration) is a great way to show your dedication to the profession of volunteer management and at the same time reflect on your values and principles.  Registration for the 2013 cycle is open through March 1. The credentialing process includes the development of a portfolio that includes a philosophical statement, ethics case study, management narrative and taking a multiple-choice exam.  CVA candidates must have at least three years experience in volunteer management, spend at least 30% of their time working with volunteers and submit two letters of recommendation.  Find out more at www.cvacert.org.

I earned my CVA five years ago.  It is a great way to communicate to others who work in city government that volunteer management does require a unique set of skills and experiences.  At the time there were no other CVA’s in my community so earning this designation set the City’s volunteer program apart from other organizations. I encourage you to explore earning your CVA; it is a great investment in your career as a volunteer management professional.

I want to close with encouragement for all the work you do to connect citizens to service in their local government. As I write this, we have had volunteers work for the last two weeks to plant a garden to honor a Mayor who served our City for 15 years.  These volunteers have had a wonderful opportunity to say thanks in a hands-on way that will be enjoyed by our residents and visitors for years ahead.  We connect the dots to make an impact on our communities and our people.
