Volunteer Gwinnett

Kay Sibetta

In November 2011, I was hired as the County’s Volunteer Program Coordinator to develop and launch Volunteer Gwinnett. My position is housed in the Human Resources (HR) Department and reports to the HR Director. As the Volunteer Program Coordinator, I serve as a liaison to the County departments to assist them with publicizing existing volunteer opportunities and creating new ways for our residents to get involved. Volunteer Gwinnett currently has volunteer opportunities in 20 of the 24 county departments.

Volunteer Gwinnett’s success is due to:

• Support and direction from  the HR Director and Deputy Director,
• Support and buy-in from Gwinnett County’s leadership and elected officials,
• Partnerships with the County’s departmental staff: Each department  assigned a volunteer liaison to work closely with me to help promote Volunteer Gwinnett and discuss possible volunteer opportunities,
• Continuous collaboration with the County’s Communications Division to develop the program’s brand and messaging as well as create cost-effective marketing campaigns to reach Gwinnett’s diverse population,
• Strong relationships with nonprofit partners and numerous organizations who are dedicated to making a positive impact in Gwinnett through community service,
• Creating a centralized, one-stop shopping volunteer experience for residents and visitors who want to make a difference in their community and learn more about the role of County government,
• Implementing four steps to join our Volunteer Gwinnett network:

     1. Visit our easy to navigate website at  www.volunteergwinnett.net.
     2. Search for volunteer opportunities to get involved and contribute.
     3. Select a volunteer activity or project that fits your schedule or lifestyle.
     4. Register as a volunteer online and if you don’t see anything of interest, submit a “Project Request”

• Having many volunteer opportunities that allow our residents to pick one that fits their skillset and schedule: Residents can choose to volunteer for a few hours a day or a week, participate in a one-time event, and/or serve on an ongoing basis.

Where we are now

Volunteer Gwinnett is on its way to exceed its 2012 goal of generating 600,000 volunteer hours and has recruited over 20,000 volunteers. Volunteer opportunities include administrative and clerical support; customer service; community engagement; special events and festivals; Court advocates; and technical assistance for numerous County programs and services.

My main role and responsibility is to promote Volunteer Gwinnett to the public and work closely with my departmental volunteer liaisons and community partners to facilitate, create, and offer diverse volunteer opportunities for residents. My job is very rewarding and exciting because I know I’m helping to make a difference in my community. Every day is different. I really enjoy meeting and working with our talented volunteers and partner organizations that have a passion to make Gwinnett a great place to live, work, and play.
