Smith County (TX) Sheriff's Office Volunteer Program

Alicia Armstrong

The new program Volunteer Program and the Jr. Deputy Ant-Crime Program introduced Mr. McGruff and Scruff Mc Gruff, the puppet. Since the program began, we have spoken to over 7,100 students in Smith County.  When children meet McGruff, he is accompanied by a Deputy who talks about stranger danger, bullying in school, when to call 9-1-1 and general safety tips. Damien Hudson who met McGruff in his Head Start classes plans to major in Law Enforcement in college.

We also serve other Smith County departments including Collections, Commissioners Courtroom, County Jail Records, Pre-Trial, Information Services for precincts 2 and 4 as well as CID (Criminal Investigation Division). For CID, volunteers enter data from pawn tickets linking the item pawned to the criminal.  At the present, many volunteers are doing data entry in our system, scanning documents and papers that need to be destroyed.
